Since late February I took part in a self-development project on Instagram arranged by 36 Days Of Type (@36Daysoftype). I've had this group of letters in my drawer for the last year or so already, and now seemed to be the perfect time to finish them :)
The idea of 36 Days of Type "challenge" on Instagram is to create a new letter from A to Z and a number from 0 to 9 every day for 36 consecutive days. The style is completely free, and most attendees seem to construct type not just by drawing them, but also from every day items and forms. Basically thinking outside of the box, being creative and most importantly having fun :)
Custom fonts can be used in logos in the form of a wordmark, or as a decorative element in a greetings card or covers of a book. I have always loved capital serif letters. The strenght they carry in the beginning of a piece of text or visual meaning they transfer to a short sentence can change the whole feeling of the design!
This type has both clean modern and traditional aspects to it, and it works best as a display font. Meaning it works best in bigger sizes than the average type on screen or on the pages of a book. They are more decorative than legible most of the time.
The creation process was inspired by Scandinavian nature, clean forms and colours. Serifs, leafy plants and striped areas are the key elements of this design. The design process started from simple sketches where I tracked my pencil movement: does the first line of the letter go up or down and with pressure (thick) or no pressure (thin)? I also added some serif decorations such as overshoots and decenders* before importing the image to Illustrator and creating a vector of each of the letters with decorative elements. Y, Z and numbers will follow in the upcoming post!
I'm planning to make this an actual font for sale in the future! What do you think? :) To get a better picture be sure to follow me on social media such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter <3 *Want to know more on the anatomy of type?
